Root Canal Procedure

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure designed to remove infected tissue from the pulp of the tooth. When minor tooth decay is left untreated, the inner pulp of the tooth becomes infected; this causes the bacteria to spread, compromising the structure of the tooth. When the bacteria enter the pulp or root canal of the tooth, a root canal procedure may be necessary.

Reasons for Root Canal Procedure

There are several reasons why you may require a root canal procedure. These reasons include:

  • Tooth infection
  • An exposed nerve of a cracked or broken tooth
  • A dead tooth

The tooth’s nerve lies within the root canal. When the nerve tissue is damaged, bacteria will increase within the root canal and can cause the tooth to become abscessed. An abscess is an infection that has spread past the ends of the tooth’s root. An abscess can cause:

  • Bone loss around the tip of the root
  • A hole to form in the side of the tooth leading to drainage into the gums, cheeks, and skin
  • Swelling that can spread to other areas of the face, neck or head

What is the procedure?

Root canals are a general dental procedure that will be completed from the comfort of the Hamilton Dental Designs office by Dr. Julee Gil. Dr. Gil will ensure that you are comfortable and that you are fully educated on your root canal procedure. Once you are ready, Dr. Gil will begin the procedure.

Dr. Gil will drill a small hole into the tooth. Through this hole, Dr. Gil will use special tools to remove the diseased tissue. A high-quality grade material called gutta percha will be injected into the tooth to help stabilize the tooth structure. The tooth will be closed using a dental filling and secured with a custom dental crown.

Are there other options to the root canal procedure?

The only other option to the root canal procedure is to have the tooth removed.
